E-7 PROPITIATION
The fourth kind of prayer is that of propitiation. It consists in deploring our sins and in offering as satisfaction for them the penance done by Christ and His saints. "God commendeth His charity towards us because when as yet wee were sinners, according to time, Christ died for us; much more, therefore, being justified by His blood, shall we be saved from wrath through Him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His son; much more being reconciled shall we be saved by His life." Often then ought we deplore our manifold sins and appease God's just wrath by prayer, in which we offer to the eternal Father the merits of His well-beloved Son, gained for the satisfaction of our sins by His death upon the cross. The thought may present itself, what prayers are best suited for prayer of propitiation, praise and thanksgiving.
