E-14 ANGELUS

Then there is the beautiful angelus, renowned in poetry and art, how little it is made of today!  In the days of faith, no Catholic who heard the angelus bell, but bowed his head and reverently honored the Blessed Mother of God.  Today, aside from priests and religious and a number of the laity of the old stock, it is rarely said, and still, in city, town and hamlet, the little bell of the Catholic church rings out its signal for prayer thrice daily, and heedless hearers recognize in it only the time of the day.  What an opportunity missed of interspersing our lives with prayer.  What an opportunity let go of by enlisting the powerful aid of the Mother of God, which would prove so helpful and consoling in the trials and difficulties of life.
