E-12 NIGHT PRAYER

The prayers at night ought again be those of the morning, adding always a brief examination of conscience and an act of contrition.  In the longer form, for the litany of the Holy Name, that of the Blessed Virgin Mary may be substituted.  In the night prayer the most important part is the Act of Contrition.  It is especially important for any who have been unfortunate enough to sin mortally.  Sudden deaths at night are not infrequent, and for such in mortal sin the Act of Contrition made before retiring may be their only chance of salvation.  Hence the importance for such to elicit an act of Perfect Contrition.
